Olivier Messiaen was captured and imprisoned in a German POW camp in 1940. During his imprisonment, he met 3 fellow musicians and composed the Quartet for the End of Time which was then premiered in the camp in January 1941. The music is tragic, powerful, hopeful, and full of a spirit that speaks to the best qualities of mankind.
