The 5 S's – Wine Tasting Basics
The simplest way to taste wine is just to drink it! However, learning to identify individual flavors and quality takes practice. This class goes through the entire tasting process and focuses on understanding the five “S’s”: see, smell, swirl, sip, savor. Identifying the 5 S’s in each tasting step help us to understand what grape variety we are drinking, and how the elements come together to make a great wine.

Tannin: The Backbone of Red Wine
Why does red wine sometimes stain my teeth? Why is this wine ‘chewy’? Why does red wine age? Why do we put wine in oak barrels? The answer to all of these questions, at least in part, is because of tannin. Learn what tannin is, where it comes from, and why it is important in wine making. We will taste a range of wines with varying amounts of tannin as we explore this crucial and important structural element in wine.

What are the common flavor profiles we find in wines and how can we talk about them without sounding like someone nobody wants to hang out with? Part 1 will be sensory-focused on the primary flavors and aromas found in most wine: fruit, flowers, herbs, spices, and oak.
